GAME TRAILER
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Released in 2020, Second Extinction is a cooperative shooter set in a world overrun by mutated dinosaurs, where players band together as survivors to reclaim the planet. While I had worked on co-op shooters before, Second Extinction featured the open world aspect, content was randomized at a larger scale than previous games I've worked on which was really fun to work on.
MY ROLE
-
I joined development during the production phase, there was a concept for all missions but all hadn't been started.
-
Mission design - responsible for the scripting, terrain work and level design for two missions, spanning over four locations.
MISSION: Contact
I got in late in the development process of this mission. The Comm center had already been made, however we wanted to extend the mission so I added two power stations, one of which would activate as the players found signs of a power outage. I made said locations from scratch and scripted a holdout event at each site.
Briefing
As you know, the station we call home - Gateway Cygnus - is but one of a network of Gateway Stations, and they are out there, orbiting Earth, each of them a host to survivors just like us. We are, however, cut off from each other, like ships passing in a storm. The Stations were never built for interplanetary communications and instead relied on Comm Centers on Earth. Comm Center Echo is one of these, and could serve as a big part in re-establishing communications with the other Gateways.
Mission Flow
-
Reroute power to the Comm Center
-
Reach the Comm Center
-
Restore power to the Comm Center
-
Close and defend the gates
-
Kill all dinosaurs inside the Comm Center
-
Align the Radar Dish

SCREENSHOTS

The Comm Center, upon clearing it of enemies the players soon find out about the power outage. They are sent to one of the Power stations to fix it.

The mission area. One of Power station A/B will be randomized as the next step after the players have tried to get the Comm Center up and running. After sorting out the power they need to head back to the Comm Center.

Power Station A.

While the generators are running, the players still need to stick around as they may break, requiring another input.

Power Station B.

Power Station A. The generators in green are the interactable objects in the midst of an Dinosaur onslaught.
MISSION: Research and Rescue
This mission had not been started when I joined the project, so the planning, location building, scripting and terrain work was all handled by me.

The dropship the players need to investigate in order to figure out where the research team went.

Said dropship will appear at a randomized spot.

The research camp. The players find that the researchers crucial work is left unfinished, they have to delve deeper underground in order to finish it.

The Research Site is filled with tunnels dug too deep, the dinosaurs aren't far away.

The scanners were left intact by the research team, they attract enemies and need to run their course in order to gather the Research Data.

The players need to upload the Research Data outside in a final holdout event.
