PROJECT OVERVIEW
Released in 2019, Rage 2 is an open-world action game set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where players assume the role of the last Ranger. Armed with superhuman abilities and a variety of weapons, they navigate through a world overrun by hostile factions and mutated creatures on-foot or en vehicle. The players are invited to explore and engage in various missions scattered throughout the world. These missions range from combat challenges to exploration tasks, with 7 main missions and countless side content.
MY ROLE
-
Built the level and mission for the preorder content "Cult of the Death God"
-
Owner of six main missions across the DLCs "Rise of the Ghosts" and "Terrormania"
-
Owner of all game mechanic tutorials in the game. "ARKs"
-
Mission design support on pre-existing content
LEVEL/MISSION: Cult of the Death God
The mission was made for the Rage 2 base game and was centered around the "Death God", Nicholas Raine who's the main character of Rage 1. The story being that he killed so many mutants in the past, so that he became the defacto Death God for all mutants.
One of the main quest givers, Marshall calls you about a favor upon leaving a town. He tells you to visit a friend of his, just referred to as "old man". Said old man sends you to a cave to deal with bothersome cult. Upon clearing the cave and retrieving Raine's armor the old man is gone, a radio message suggests that he was indeed Nicholas Raine. Naturally not all players will not have played the predecessor, but the mission is a homage to those who did.
The work was split between me, an AI designer for the boss mechanics and a lighting artist.

SCREENSHOTS

The Entrance.

First scripted event, a group of mutants rush down from the highground with clear silhouettes.

Mutant wall spawners.

Style change, more corruption i.e stronger mutant presence further down.

Event area, hordes of mutants appear from the pipes & tunnels until a final group blasts the way forward open.

To the left the player is enticed by pickups and at the same time get a glimpse into the boss area.

Boss area, three waves of enemies will appear at quarterly health percentages and aid the Warlock Boss as he engages you with fireballs.

Shortly after the fight you get the first glimpse of the way out.

Plenty of pickups at the end to ensure that the player is ready for another fight after leaving.

The Old Man's house (NIcholas Raine), though he's no longer there at this point.
MISSIONS: DLC - Rise of the Ghosts
The first DLC of Rage 2 consisted of five main missions (the base game had eight). It takes the player to a new island with a new nemesis to chase after.
I was the sole mission designer working on the main missions. There were three level designers, one narrative designer, me and the creative director involved in coming up with the content for said missions. My main focus was the implementation of all the mission states, cutscenes, save states, world states, for all missions as well as any logic for the new HUB area.
Mission Flow
I could list all the objectives for all the missions but that would be terribly boring. Instead we can look at the overarching flow of the mission chain:
-
The first mission takes you to the island
-
The second mission is a prison break where you need to regain your powers to escape
-
The third/fourth missions delves deeper into the ambitions of your newfound nemesis
-
The fifth mission is about stopping her from nuking the world

SCREENSHOTS

Once a player owns the DLC they will, upon leaving a town get a distraught message from a woman in need of help. The coordinates leads them here. The ARK has been fiddled with so the player gets trapped in a simulation, it's actually quite cool.
MISSIONS: DLC - Terrormania
The second DLC of Rage 2 comes with one long mission. You are called to aid the Wasteland Wizard Mandoo who's done something terribly wrong with an object called the Necrodisc and is willing to send you to the Deadlands in order to retrieve it. The Deadlands is a part of the swamp with an ominous filter.
I was responsible for the mission states, save states, world states and any HUB logic moving the player between realms.
Mission Flow
-
Investigate the Cabin
-
Pick up the sword
-
Retrieve the Necrodisc shards
-
Return the Necrodisc

SCREENSHOTS

The Cabin where the player can move between the main world and the Deadlands. No terrain changes were made in this DLC because of patch size constraints. Instead a filter is applied to the world and the art is vastly different in the Deadlands.
MISSIONS: ARK Tutorials
My onboarding task at Avalanche was to make tutorials for all the different weapons and powers in the game. There was a total of 14 base game tutorials in total, six weapons and 8 abilities. The style chosen was a clean though aged simulated training area with faceless enemies. It being a simulation was hinted at by toggling enemy / room asset wireframes to make it appear like they weren't real.
In Rage 2 the player starts with no powers, they have to roam the world to collect them from ARKs. The player was given a power or weapon after they've connected to it and finished the ensuing tutorial.
Player Objective
-
Use the power / weapon provided!
WALKTHROUGH
SCREENSHOTS

The tutorial room where I'd spawn in enemies, explosive barrels or any other structure in order to make a weapon or a power shine in its best light.
